Tanagai
VBC
Guadalcanal
Province
Tanagai was started by the community under direction of
Wilson Samu in 1992. Since then, lots of growth and expansion have taken
place at our centre under the management of Catholic Priest Father Norman
Arkwright. The centre has suffered damage from vandals during the ethnic
tension on Guadalcanal. We are working hard at restoring the facilities.
Even though we used permanent building materials to construct the site,
our buildings have been severely damaged during the unrest on Guadalcanal
in recent years.
At our centre, we have good water supply. We have 1 classroom, a staff house and a kitchen. Our power supply was damaged during the tension. The centre has a radio for communication. Our buildings are damaged and we have started restoring them, although help is needed for this process, from our supporters in government, the donor community, and churches and NGOs.
At Tanagai we take in female and male students of all denominations, although most of our students are of the Catholic faith. We pride in helping to build a manpower base for Guadalcanal Province. Sports at the centre include soccer, volleyball and netball. Our staff members are all temporary, making themselves available on days when we offer courses.
