There is great interest and excitement about Vanga. It is not misplaced, for it is a truly unique idea. The students have wholeheartedly embraced the opportunity offered to them. It is their astounding hard work and determination to succeed, their preparedness to risk exposure by taking initiative and responsibility, that will mark the college as an outstanding success. They offer their skills, which have often been devalued in the past, with cheerfulness, good will and with all their hearts. This will make a difference to many young Solomon Islanders who are voiceless, powerless, invisible and faced with a poverty of opportunity. This is just the beginning of VTC, and it is hoped that many young people will benefit in one way or another in years to come. And it is also hoped that Solomon Islanders will continue to offer their recognition and support to make sure this dream becomes a real long-term success.
Finally, with a commitment to staying rooted in the soil, and relevant
to the reality of the rural context of Solomon Islands, Vanga Teachers College,
is indeed heading in the right direction, and will become a significant
educational institution both nationally and internationally.
However, there are issues that need to be addressed to increase the effectiveness
of the college and to ensure its long-term sustainability. Fees will be
charged from 2003, the college must become self-sufficient in food, and
run effective enterprises to raise income. In addition some donor support
will still be needed for the next few years whilst the college remains in
its infancy.
